I found a heavy box of 1943 pennies (when copper was scarce, being needed for shell casings for WWII, and steel was substituted as the primary coin content). I sat on it for a few years, thinking I could make something cool but not knowing exactly what. Eventually the idea came to me to make a 3D dollar symbol out of money - completely - background and all. I went to the internet, bought a few bags of shredded bills, found an old mirror frame, and here is the result. I've entitled the first piece Rust & Moths - a reminder that all things monetary are transitory (a little tongue in cheek - the pennies are obviously rusty but the money is shredded rather than moth eaten) - but it is supposed to reflect that you can't take it with you. After the first piece was completed the idea of making art out of money greatly appealed to me. The second piece I created was of one dollar bills. I wish I had more evenly distributed the black vs. green sides of the bills but every piece contains a "one" and the antique Egyptian frame is cool. I call that piece of art "One". I moved on to make a piece of art called "Five". It speaks for itself, but every nickel (US or Canadian) is from a year starting or ending with a 5. I have an immense amount of foreign currency waiting to be made into art; but I need some help with lucite or acrylic embedment. If you know something about this and you're in my area - please contact me.

The tool dies and dice are from machine shop class - a part of my design drafting curriculum. The jewelry is due to my best friend being fascinated by aluminum - there is very little you can't accomplish with a dremel tool. |

A little wood burning and a little selective wood staining - voila. |

How many years did this sapling grow around a grape vine? I cut two of these down in the woods near my house, shaved off all the bark - except in the curls, collared the base with a piece of copper piping, kept one and gave the other to my elderly neighbor to help her walk down her hill and get the mail. |
